2025 Toyota HiLux Revealed – The Most Powerful Pickup?!

Get ready for the revolution in utility vehicles! The new generation Toyota HiLux is set to launch next year, bringing some of the biggest changes in its history. As the automotive world races towards a fully electric future, the HiLux aims to regain its top spot with innovative technology and hybrid power.

The automotive industry is transforming rapidly due to strict emissions regulations in major markets like China, Europe, the US, and Australia. Utility vehicles face a unique challenge: they need to comply with new laws while maintaining the power and endurance required for heavy-duty tasks. Toyota’s solution? Hybrids.

In Australia, Toyota’s entire passenger car range is now hybrid-only, with commercial vehicles and 4WDs still relying on petrol or diesel. The upcoming HiLux will feature a game-changing i-Force Max petrol-hybrid powertrain, pairing a 2.4-liter turbo-petrol engine with a 36kW electric motor integrated into an eight-speed transmission. This setup delivers an impressive 243kW and 630Nm, far surpassing the current model’s 2.8-liter turbo-diesel engine.

Although the hybrid powertrain offers significant power, it may not match the current model’s 3500kg towing capacity. However, a plug-in hybrid version with an electric range of up to 200km is a strong possibility. Toyota Australia’s Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Franchise Operations, Sean Hanley, expressed excitement about this potential, highlighting its practicality and customer appeal.

Toyota is collaborating with Chinese automaker BYD to develop plug-in hybrids. BYD’s plug-in hybrid Shark ute, launching in Australia later this year, combines a 1.5-liter petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering 320kW and 650Nm. This makes it faster than many current models and gives it a total driving range of about 845km, although its towing capacity is slightly lower at 2500kg.

Looking ahead, Toyota is also exploring hydrogen-powered HiLux models in the UK and plans to release a fully electric version in Thailand soon. The next-generation HiLux is expected to offer both two- and four-wheel drive variants, various body styles, and advanced technology upgrades.

Prices are anticipated to rise, especially if the HiLux goes hybrid-only and ditches manual transmissions. The current range starts at $26,475 and goes up to $74,310, but new models could see an increase of around $10,000. The HiLux, built in Thailand, is likely to debut at the 2025 Bangkok Motor Show in late March, with deliveries starting later that year.
