All-New 2026 Toyota Highlander – Promises Bigger Performance and Smarter Features!

The 2026 Toyota Highlander is expected to arrive with a major redesign, offering a more modern look, updated technology, enhanced safety features, and improved functionality. This three-row family SUV has been a popular choice for years, and the next generation may take a bold step forward by becoming a hybrid-only vehicle. This would mean removing the traditional gasoline-only option entirely, aligning it with Toyota’s recent moves on the larger Sequoia SUV and the Camry sedan.

If the hybrid-only strategy becomes reality, pricing could start around 49,000 dollars. This is higher than the current gasoline model, which starts at roughly 41,000 dollars, but much closer when compared to the existing hybrid version, which starts at almost 47,500 dollars. The increase would not be as extreme when looking at hybrid-to-hybrid comparisons.

Currently, the Highlander Hybrid uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors, producing a total of 243 horsepower. This setup delivers a strong fuel economy of 35 miles per gallon in the city and on the highway, which is impressive for a large SUV. For 2026, Toyota may introduce a second, more powerful hybrid option. A likely candidate is the Hybrid Max powertrain from the Grand Highlander, which combines a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with electric motors to produce 362 horsepower. This would give the Highlander a noticeable performance boost while still achieving around 26 miles per gallon in the city and 27 on the highway.

Toyota could also explore a plug-in hybrid version, similar to the RAV4 Prime and the Prius Prime, both of which offer more than 40 miles of driving on electric power alone. This would give the Highlander lineup greater flexibility for drivers who want both efficiency and performance.

While there is some speculation about whether the 2026 Highlander will be larger, it is important to note that Toyota already offers the Grand Highlander as a bigger alternative. The current Highlander already delivers generous second-row legroom and excellent cargo capacity with 48.4 cubic feet of space behind the second row when the third row is folded. However, the third row remains best suited for children due to its limited space.

Inside, the 2026 Highlander is expected to receive significant technology upgrades. The outgoing model came with a 7.0-inch driver display and an 8.0-inch central touchscreen as standard, with larger 12.3-inch screens available. The new generation may make the larger screens standard and could even offer the 14.0-inch infotainment system seen in Lexus models. A front passenger display could also be an option in higher trims.

Connectivity features such as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will likely return, along with Toyota’s latest Safety Sense driver assistance suite. Premium features like a head-up display, a hands-free power liftgate, and an upgraded audio system should also be available.

Toyota is expected to reveal more details about the 2026 Highlander by mid-2025, with its official debut set for later in the year. With the possibility of a hybrid-only lineup, more powerful options, and cutting-edge technology, the next Highlander aims to stay competitive against rivals such as the Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride, and Mazda CX-90.
