BMW is closing the book on one of its most beloved machines, and it’s doing it with style, attitude, and an extremely limited production run. Meet the BMW Z4 Final Edition, a special version of the Z4 M40i built to commemorate the end of the roadster’s production—and likely the last pure, classic BMW roadster we’ll ever see.

Revealed today in majestic New Jersey, the Final Edition serves as both a farewell letter and a collector’s item. It will be produced only from February through April of 2026, and in very small numbers. Buyers will choose between a six-speed manual—a rarity in 2025—or an eight-speed Steptronic automatic, but every car comes identically loaded and identically priced: $77,500 plus $1,175 destination.

If you want the best the era had to offer, it was likely one of these picks.

A Frozen Black Finale

For its last bow, the Z4 receives a look that reflects its cult status. Every Final Edition is finished in BMW Individual Frozen Black metallic, a matte paint that emphasizes the Z4’s sharp creases and long-hood, short-deck proportions. The finish pairs with the Shadowline Package, which adds gloss-black accents to the grille, mirror caps, aero elements, and exhaust tips.

Something BMW calls a “Moonlight Black” soft top completes the monochrome theme, while a pop of red graces the brake calipers. The Final Edition rides on a staggered wheel setup: 19-inch M Dual-Spoke 800M wheels wrapped in 255-width front tires, and massive 20-inch rears on 285-width rubber.

Manual Models Get More Than a Shifter

The manual-transmission Final Edition isn’t just about driver engagement—it actually drives differently. Cars lucky enough to get the six-speed get the full Edition Handschalter chassis tuning: revised auxiliary springs, a reinforced front anti-roll bar clamp, new rear damper mapping, updated variable steering software, and unique logic for both traction control and the M Sport differential. In short, BMW did more than bolt in a stick. They engineered the chassis around it. It’s BMW’s way of rewarding buyers for opting for the three-pedal cars.

A Cabin Stitched With Significance

The interior of the Z4 Final Edition leans into subtle drama. Vernasca leather and Alcantara cover the M Sport seats, while red contrast stitching runs across the dashboard, doors, center console, and even the floor mats. The “Z4 FINAL EDITION” door sills and M-striped seatbelts seal the car’s commemorative status.

Standard equipment leaves nothing on the table. BMW includes the Driving Assistance Package, Premium Package, Head-Up Display, Parking Assistant, and a Harman Kardon surround sound system—effectively every major comfort and safety feature BMW offers on the Z4.

Marking the end of BMW’s legendary V12 era, the M760i remains a rare and powerful masterpiece that blends brute force with executive-class luxury.

A Final Chapter in a Legendary Line

The Z4’s first generation debuted in 2002, succeeding the Z3 and continuing BMW’s lineage of open-top sports cars stretching back to icons like the 328, 507, and Z8. Built in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the original Z4 earned praise for its 50/50 weight distribution, rigid chassis, and engaging dynamics. Its successor, launched in 2008, introduced the innovative retractable hardtop and the brand’s first use of iDrive in a roadster.

The current generation, unveiled in 2018 at Pebble Beach, returned to a fabric soft top and refined the car into a modern, premium driver’s machine powered by BMW’s straight-six. It is this generation that now receives the Final Edition sendoff.

A Collectible Farewell

With its limited run, exclusive paint, commemorative details, and available manual transmission, the BMW Z4 Final Edition is less a trim package and more a full-circle celebration of a classic sports car format—one we may not see again from BMW. For enthusiasts, the message is clear: if you want a piece of BMW’s roadster history, this is the last call.
