Ford reportedly began talking about a four-door Mustang variant before the original pony car even launched in 1964. There are a few reasons to suspect we’ll get a four-door variation of the current S650-generation Mustang. But according to Automotive News, we shouldn’t bank on seeing it before 2028.

Ford’s CEO admitted a four-door Mustang was “on the table” in 2020. Then, in early 2024, he said he’ll make certain it has “all the performance and attitude of the original.” Finally, the automaker began to trademark Mustang “Mach 4” in various markets. So should Mustang fans dreaming of a bigger back seat get ready to trade in their coupes? Not so fast.

Automotive News recently reported that the Mustang Mach 4 won’t enter production until 2028, or later. Marketing departments and CEOs may be opaque about when a new model is hitting the market, but often, the timeline of factory retooling clarifies things. This 2028 date comes from the various EV projects in line ahead of the Mach 4.

The intriguing thing about this announcement is that the Mach 4 may now line up with the second-generation redesign of the electric Mustang Mach-E, expected around 2030. Will we see a single four-door Mustang crossover with electric, hybrid, or traditional powertrains? We’ll just have to wait and find out.
