The Jeep Recon has been unveiled as the brand’s first fully electric model aimed primarily at off-road use, essentially presenting as a battery-electric version of the combustion-engined Wrangler.
Featuring an electric all-wheel-drive powertrain courtesy of a dual-motor setup offering 650 hp and 620 pounds-feet (840 Nm) of torque, the Jeep Recon is capable of 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in a claimed 3.6 seconds, drawing from a 100 kWh, 400-volt battery that offers a claimed 250 miles (400 km) of range on the US EPA estimate.
Jeep has yet to specify the charging capabilities of the Recon, though being built on the Stellantis group’s STLA Large platform, this should be in line with models using a 400-volt architecture which will be capable of peak charging capacity of 175 kW.
The front drive unit on the Recon employs a 11:1 final drive ratio with an open differential, while the rear drive unit uses a 15:1 final drive ratio with an electronically locking differential. Traction management is by the Selec-Terrain system that offers auto, Sport, Snow, Sand and Rock modes, along with a low-speed Selec-Speed Control hill climb and descent function.
In terms of off-roading capabilities, the Recon boasts of approach, breakover and departure angles of 33.8 degrees, 23.3 degrees and 33.1 degrees respectively in Moab trim with 33-inch tyres providing 231 mm of ground clearance. Suspension is by unequal-length double wishbones in front and a multi-link layout at the rear.
The Recon EV draws another parallel with the Wrangler in terms of bodywork, where the new battery-electric model has been designed with doors, rear quarter glass and tailgate glass that can be removed without the use of tools. Unlike the Wrangler however, the roof on the Recon cannot be fully removed; it can be specified with either a standard dual-pane sunroof or a one-touch powered unit.
Inside, the Recon EV features a 12.3-inch driver instrumentation display and a 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen, the latter touted as the largest offered in a Jeep model yet. Audio is by an Alpine sound system, using speakers that are located beneath the seats to enable continued function when the vehicle’s doors are removed.
A two-tier centre console features a wireless device charger on the upper level and cable pass-through to a lower compartment, and its door interior panels are modular with removable straps and interchangeable cargo solutions. At the rear, the luggage compartment holds up to 1,866 litres with the rear seats folded, while the front trunk holds up to 85 litres.
Production of the Jeep Recon EV begins early next year at the Toluca assembly plant in Mexico, and pricing for the Recon starts from US$65,000, beginning with market launches in the United States and Canada, with other markets to follow. According to Autocar, the Recon will be launched in the United Kingdom and in Europe late-2026.
