There’s video of what happens when you reverse a stolen car into a gas pump with a cop watching

A suspected car thief in Salt Lake City proved he isn’t the world’s smoothest operator. When he stopped to fuel up a stolen vehicle, he managed to light the entire place on fire.
A police officer pulled into a Maverik gas station in Utah and noticed a vehicle that looked a lot like a car that had just been reported stolen. The situation was suspicious enough to ask some more questions. Lt. Leigh Willis of the SLPD explained, “When the officer attempted to stop the car, the driver put it in reverse, ran into the gas pump.”
Did he attempt some smooth evasive maneuvers but misjudge the space? Did he mash the accelerator, forgetting the car was in reverse? It’s unclear. But we did learn one thing.
What happens when you reverse a stolen car into a gas pump
Ever wonder what happens when you back into the gas pump? Well, this one buckled under the force of the car, and the car ended up on top of the machine. The collision “ignited the gas pumps.”
This would have been a great time for our clumsy heistmaster to call it quits. But he didn’t. He tumbled out of the burning vehicle and took off on foot. He didn’t get very far.
The police officer, who had just watched the entire clown show unfold from his squad car, simply drove after the runner. The suspect “was captured about a block away.”
Even after the officer had the cuffs on the clumsy suspect, emergency services had more fires to put out—literally. “He’s in custody, and then the fire department came.”
Unfortunately, the fire turned into a real blaze. The fire department couldn’t save the car, which was completely engulfed in flames. But the good news is that no injuries have been reported.
Lt. Willis concluded, “One in custody, the fire’s out, and just another day in the city.” See video of the flames embedded below:
