Planning a trip to Rameswaram in Mid October and I am expecting Northeast monsoon to set in across entire TN by then, unlike Karnataka where Monsoon is from June to October:.
From what I have read the rains won’t be very intense, I am expecting pleasant light showers here and there throughout the journey.
Having said that, this is going to be my first long drive to Southern TN, so I’m pretty excited. I will be travelling with my wife, who will try her best to stay awake but usually dozes off an hour into the drive. Thanks to my smooth driving in moderate speed (2000RPM, 80 Kmph) cruising .
We are starting from Jayanagar in Bengaluru. We will be starting at around 4 AM. I’m considering to take NH 44 all the way till Madhurai i.e.,
Bengaluru -> Hosur -> Krishnagiri -> Salem -> Karur -> Dindigul -> Madhurai -> Rameswaram.
I won’t be entering Madhurai city, instead I’ll be going around the city in the bypass via the airport. Planning to refuel at Shell near Madhurai Airport (being a Shell loyalist, disappointed to see less number of Shell stations in TN.
Planning to visit the Keeladi museum. After that, the last leg of our journey through scenic route between Madhurai and Rameswaram).
Questions to you Amigos:
1. Is the route I have chosen the best route or would you suggest any alternative route?
2. Where is the best place to stay in Rameswaram? Good for both stay and food
3. Google says TN has monsoon between October and December, does this mean there will be cloud cover in Rameswaram? Wondering if it will spoil the chance of catching the famous beach sunset
Appreciate, if you have additional travel tips for me:.
Here’s what BHPian ShreyG replied:
On route, seems the standard route but please be wary of the multiple diversions between Bangalore and Krishnagiri (counted 7 the last time I went, ~ 1 month back). You can try the alternate NH844 starting from Hosur and meeting the regular, NH44 after Dharmapuri. As I understand, it is now ready with only 1 or 2 small diversions. And the double advantage of avoiding the steep ghats and multiple diversions.
For stay, please don’t get your hopes up too high. Rameswaram is a strictly temple town with not many fancy option to stay or eat. There’s the Residency Towers but availability during my visits has been a challenge.
I stayed in the Daiwik the 1st time (visited in October 1st week, cue #3 ) and had an unpleasant stay. Have stayed in Hotel Arjunaa the next couple of times which was decent. For food, you can tell them exactly how you like it else expect surprises.Now on the cloud cover, I have visited thrice so far, in October, March and during new years. And never did I encounter rains there. Keep an eye on the weather app and you should be able to catch the sunset at Dhanushkodi or the Pamban bridge with fantastic views.
Happy touring!!
