This mom takes ‘helicopter parent’ to the next level
Police in Commerce, Georgia, pulled over a woman for running a downtown stop sign. While they were writing her ticket, another car blew by. Officers clocked it speeding 100 mph through a 25 mph zone. Naturally, they abandoned the first traffic stop and went after the super speeder.
Officers chased this second car along multiple roads. Then, a second car appeared, blocking the police from pursuing the suspect. To their surprise, the officers realized it was the woman who had run the stop sign. They managed to steer around her, but the super speeder escaped. When the woman caught up with the police, they pulled her over and arrested her.
Police didn’t need to wait long. The super speeder soon returned, in the car he had used to evade officers. The driver was Nyier Daniels, an offensive lineman for the University of Georgia’s football team. In the passenger seat was his coach, who had demanded the freshman turn himself in.
The best ‘blocker’ on the University of Georgia team
It’s still unclear what was going on here. Was Daniels so late to practice or some other commitment that he felt the need to drive 100 mph in a 25? Did his mother volunteer to distract the police and later interfered with the chase to protect her son? We may have to wait for the trial to find out. But if Daniels’ mother is that good at blocking for her son, the coach should consider putting her on the field.
Daniels’ charges include reckless driving, two counts of stop signs and yield signs, and fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer. His mother faces charges including speeding, two counts of running a stop sign, obstruction, fleeing, failure to maintain lane, and reckless driving.
The University of Georgia’s Athletic Department said, “We are aware of the charges and are currently in the process of gathering additional information. This is a pending legal matter, and we will not have further comment at this time.”
